2019 KS95's "Clouds Choir" for a Cause

“Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

This quote by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is on the front page of our newest reading unit which is called “One Day.” It’s based on a music video that highlights the actions of people doing small acts of kindness to better the lives of one another. We begin this mini-unit by watching “My Last Days- Zach Sobiech’s story." The “My Last Days” series is on a YouTube channel called “Soul Pancake” which was co-created by Rainn Wilson (he played Dwight Schrute for my fellow Office fans).

Zach Sobiech wrote songs to the people he deeply cared about as his way of saying goodbye before he passed away from Osteosarcoma at the age of 17. One of his songs (“Clouds”) became the number 1 song on iTunes shortly after his passing. For the past 7 years, there has been a fundraising event at the Mall of America to help fund research toward preventing Osteosarcoma. I believe this would be an amazing opportunity to provide our students an example of fundraising for a cause that directly affects other people their age. The Zach Sobiech Osteosarcoma fund is directly related to providing the resources necessary to finding a cure for a disease that affects 800-900 new people each year.

Our goal is to raise $1,000 through the month of November. The mantra that I am telling our kiddos is 100/10 achieves our goal. If we can encourage 100 people to donate 10 dollars, we will meet our goal. Any assistance to meeting our goal to better the lives of people who experience Osteosarcoma would be incredibly appreciated.

The main intention of this is to show our students that there is nothing wrong with thinking big. The second mini-section of the “One Day” unit is showing different stories of people who have committed to a cause that is greater than themselves. I feel like this opportunity is a wonderful real experience to show what we can accomplish if we commit to serving the needs of others.

Steps to Take (More education on the fundraiser)

- Watch Zach Sobiech’s “My Last Days”. This will give you such a great representation as to why this is such an amazing educational experience, and an amazing fundraising opportunity to help others who are experiencing Osteosarcoma.

- Watch the “Clouds concert @ the Mall of America” to get an idea on the venue if we were to achieve our goal.

- Please like our Explorer Pod Facebook Page. Please please share it out to social media and encourage others to participate. 100/10.
